Members Sharpen Skills in SCBA Confidence Training Maze
Career and volunteer members recently took part in the Fire Rescue Academy’s SCBA Confidence Training (Maze), an intensive hands-on evolution designed to strengthen critical skills needed in high-stress, low-visibility environments.
The SCBA confidence maze challenges firefighters to navigate a confined, disorienting prop while on air, simulating conditions commonly encountered during structure fires. Throughout the training, participants focused on air management, problem-solving, and decision-making under stress, reinforcing the importance of remaining calm, controlled, and methodical when visibility is limited and conditions are deteriorating.
By operating in a controlled but demanding environment, members were able to build confidence in their equipment and their ability to troubleshoot obstacles while maintaining situational awareness. These skills are essential for firefighter safety and effective operations on the fireground.
The maze prop was set up at Lutherville VFC, providing local members with convenient access to high-quality, realistic training. Following its time at Lutherville, the SCBA confidence maze will continue to Dundalk Station 6, Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department, and Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Company, extending this valuable training opportunity to additional departments.
Lutherville VFC remains committed to ongoing training and professional development to ensure our members are prepared to serve the community safely and effectively—no matter the conditions.
